The mountain is unmoving,
but ever-changing,
and always inspiring.When 'all at sea':
keep still to stay afloat;
flailing around risks being drowned.
When 'lost in the woods':
stay put to keep calm;
threshing about risks not getting out.
Mist clears:
the sage is a mountain!
These allegories serve as a caution against hasty or erratic
attempts to retrieve
healthy mental balance via undisciplined or unregulated
therapies.
To keep calm, and carry
on a simple routine, goes hand-in-hand with its
partner-behaviour of clear-headed thinking and problem
solving.
This is another example of Taoism's espousal of 'non-action'
(not to be confused with inaction) as one of its guiding
principles.
